NFL Training “Evolution” Blog March 21, 2012
Week 4 of the NFL Training “Evolution” is in mid-stride. Overall improvements in maximal strength, power, endurance and lean muscle mass are continuing to mount as the training evolves daily.
High volumes of training are being performed at Equinox gym in the South Bay. Transitioning the players into the maximal strength acute variables from the hypertrophy adaptation, each athlete is developing tremendous strength necessary for the football field.
Blending this improvement in their maximal strength with explosiveness exercises, total body movements are being maximized through the use of power lifting exercises as well as plyometric drills.
This necessary combination of strength and power is being channeled via sports-specific drills to enhance each athlete in their respective positions.
Additionally, mitochondrial density continues to develop through the integration of the energy system manipulation. A systematic training routine carried out on the treadmill works synergistically with the resistance training component to enhance each athlete’s metabolic efficiency.
An improvement in mitochondrial density will, in short, enable each player to perform more work. In the end, the ability to do more training will result in an increase in overall conditioning and allow each athlete to excel on the football field.
The speed enhancement, agility, and quickness (SAQ) drills are continuously improving. Combining the traditional ladder drills with a variety of agility movements has forced each athlete to develop the necessary movement patterns simulated on the field.
This challenging integration of ladder drills with agility movements is a neurological leap from performing the drills independently. Back-to-back utilization of these movements provides a new stimulus for each player forcing them to perform non-traditional patterns of movement. By combining the ladder drills with agility movements together, each athlete will be prepared for any movement in any direction on the football field.
The once seemingly insurmountable nutrition plan is being carried out thoroughly and the improvements in fat free mass and energy levels are tremendous. Additionally, Met-Rx has been so gracious as to provide the players with a variety of supplements to aid in their off-season training. The use of these supplements has assisted in muscle recovery and building lean muscle mass.
The players training here in beautiful Southern California has not been all work with no play. Surrounded by amazing opportunities to enjoy what SoCal offers, the athletes have maximized their ability to work hard with the enjoyment needed for relaxation.
